Cultural heritage as a resource for sustainable growthWe’re excited to announce that we have been assigned to support the project “Unique Historical Kalmar County” in making better use of cultural heritage as a driver for sustainable development. We will be looking at three things:
2022-05-25 Handbook for inclusive cultural environmentsWe can now present a guide on how to create more inclusive experiences of cultural environments. The guide is a result of the Vinnova-financed project INKULT, which we have carried out together with KMV Forum and Kramfors municipality, with test beds in Kramfors, Visby and Spånga-Tensta. The guide offers methods and tools to give people with functional variations better conditions to experience and contribute to the development of cultural environments. The project has also prepared a plan proposal for physical accessibility adaptation. Download the manual here.
2022-02-14 Implementing Agenda 2030 through SymbioCityOver the past 10 years, we have been involved in supporting local governments in over 20 countries to develop inclusive and sustainable cities through SymbioCity. The programme has been funded by Sida and implemented by SKL International. Yesterday, we presented some of the results and experiences of this journey, but with the eyes set on the coming 10 years and the implementation of Agenda 2030.

We explored this question together with Tyresö kommun, local actors, developers and young people to develop a Sustainability Programme for future urban development. In Stockholm, we will be working with community dialogues (dialogpromenader) in different stages of the urban development process. And in Kungsbacka we will be conducting social impact assessments and child impact assessments in various projects as the municipality grows. Stay tuned for more!
2022-06-23 Inclusive Education in DuhokWe've been lucky to work over the past year on a project that is developing integrated governance through inclusive education in Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq for SKL International. Now we've secured funding to continue the programme and focus on peer-to-peer bilateral networks between Sweden and Iraq.
And we finally made it to the beautiful city of Duhok in January! We were able to meet our team, build new strategic partnerships and meet with our new donor, UNDP. We also visited the pilot schools we have been working with to see inclusive education in action. 2022-01-14 Evaluation of tactical urbanism strategiesLiving Cities has done an evaluation of the process and stakeholders’ experiences when a city street was temporarily transformed into a pedestrian area during the summer in Jönköping.
The temporary transformations of public areas, also called tactical urbanism, is a strategy used by the municipality to make unique environments accessible to a new crowd and improve city gathering places. The evaluation engaged local stakeholders such as visitors, businesses and residents to understand experiences, benefits and challenges. 2021-11-25 A nature trail in TyresöWith children leading the way, Tyresö municipality has with support from the project Parkliv (Living Cities and SLU Alnarp) developed a small green forest located between two residential areas with different socioeconomic charactereristics. Minor elements to encourage play, movement and curiosity to nature have been added.

Vamos São Paulo! This week we will meet our CONEXUS partners in the Brazilian capital for 3 intensive days of learning and workshops. In CONEXUS we are bringing together Latin American and European partners to strengthen international cooperation on nature-based solutions in urban environments. Action research is ongoing in 7 city life-labs (Santiago, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Bogota, Torino, Lisbon and Barcelona) and Living Cities is leading the co-learning task within the consortium – how are we making co-production happen?
So what is NBS? Nature based solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. Win-win you could call it. Funded by the European Commission as part of Horizon 2020 and headed up by the University of Sheffield. www.conexusnbs.com 2022-05-23 A vision for Norrahammar - an industrial heritageNorrahammar industrial heritage is located just south of Jönköping city. The area was an important industry and employer until it was shut down in 1991. Today, the area is pointed out as a development site. At this early stage of the development process, Living Cities is supporting the work to co-create a local vision and formulate strategies for how the area may once again become an important and active place in the small town center.
22-10-10 Biking in SörmlandLiving Cities will support the region of Sörmland in their understanding of different target groups, their needs and capabilities when it comes to biking. With the help of our own tools and theoretical framework to understand biking, we will perform target group analyses and a crash course in applying intersectional perspectives to better understand different groups of bikers.
2022-02-20 Dialogue for gender equalityVätterstranden in Jönköping is a unique resource to the city with its long sandy beaches, walking lanes, activity spaces and restaurants. In 2021, Living Cities conducted citizens dialogues which resulted in almost 3800 interactions. A huge set of ideas and experiences of the beach stretch, by a range of different target groups, were collected. In 2022, Living Cities continues the collaboration with the municipality in an advisory role, as the development of the city beach proceeds.
