Women on Wheels
Few means of transport are as cheap, efficient and environmentally sustainable as the bicycle. Still, in many parts of the world bikes are used almost solely by men. Making cycling more acceptable and attractive for women brings huge benefits on both an individual and a societal level. The innovation project Women on Wheels aimed to empower women and increase their quality of life through low-cost, no-carbon mobility – bicycling. The project has developed a toolbox for biking, gender and diversity, and tested the tools in 13 cities in five countries (Sweden, Indonesia, India, Myanmar and the US). Methods for change include working with norms and attitudes, improving infrastructure and rethinking the bicycle itself. Living Cities led the project and has together with project partners developed the Pedalista model.
